Observation Narrative
This vegetation could be described as "pine barren." Soils have a high water table, and the upper horizon is a leached gray/white color. Vegetation hasn't burned in decades, and this has prevented regeneration of Pinus palustris. Repeated prescribed burning would eliminate thick duff, stimulate grass and forb colonization, and create a savanna or woodland physiognomy here. Herb stratum is multi-layered. More releve plots needed here. Nearby well-drained sandy ridges support Quercus laevis but no Kalmia angustifolia.
Pinus taeda < 25 cm dbh.
Plot located in a young stand of pines passed over by loggers, east of the sandy "ditch."
